Cold Feet

Sorry Mom, you were right, wrapping yourself up before going outside may help prevent the chills. This is a commonly debated topic; a lot of scientists will argue that cold weather has nothing to do with starting colds, and others will argue that it may make a world of difference. Well, a study was conducted at the Common Cold Centre in Wales to answer this question.

The Study

The study began by comparing college students that sat outside with their bare feet in a bowl of 50 degree water for around 20 minutes, to those who sat outside with their bare feet in empty bowls. The students that reported more cold symptoms within 13 days were the students who feet were in the cool water.

Reflections

Cold weather does have a cold producing effect. However, the scientific evidence behind this answer is still uncertain. My thoughts is that it probably has something to do with the thin air during colder months which would make it easier for bacteria to travel through the air and reach in openings in the human body. Make sure to cover up during the winter months, and wash your hands frequently in order to reduce your chances of getting a cold.
